چکیده

There have been several attempts to describe traffic flow behaviour by modelling the relationship between the main variables describing traffic such as speed, flow and density. Some of these models are based on simplistic assumptions and therefore, they are far from being accurate in representing the whole range of traffic conditions (e.g. from free flowing to congested situations). This paper describes a speed-flow traffic model based on a tworegime linear speed-density relationship. The proposed model gives a mathematical representation for the likely speed-flow relationship based on published data from the Highway Capacity Manual. The model is robust and simple to use in describing this relationship for different traffic and roadway conditions. It can be applied in modelling traffic behaviour and used in estimating delays when dealing with stable as well as unstable traffic flow conditions ranging from free-flow to stationary queues. The model is also recommended for use in text books when describing speed-flow-density relationships.

Evaluation of Methods for Computing Free-Flow Speed and Its ‎Significance in the HCM 2010; Case Study: A Ramp-Weaving Segment

The core methodology of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) 2010 for freeway analyses is based on Free-Flow Speed (FFS). Moreover, weaving segments are major elements of freeway facilities that form where two one-way traffic streams intersect by merging and diverging maneuvers. Hence, this study used three different methods to compute FFS of a ramp-weaving segment, and then employed the proposed ...

Traffic Flow Characteristics of Isolated Off-ramps in Iranian Expressways

The purpose of this study was to investigate traffic flow characteristics at off-ramp junctions in Iranian expressways. The study was conducted on the traffic behavior in isolated off-ramp vicinity of 6-lane expressways. The database consisted of traffic flow and traffic speed information extracted from videotapes. The relationship between diverging traffic flow in the right lane of expressway ...

Performance Assessment of the 2010 HCM and Its Calibrated Model in Estimation of Weaving and Non-weaving Speed

Calibration is a conventional method which is utilized to adapt traffic models based on local situations in order to achieve best results. One of the issues regarding the efficiency of this method is whether traffic models should be calibrated only in one or two major cities of a country or calibrated based upon a comprehensive selection of cities. Therefore, this study, which has used the actu...

Analysis of the Impact of user’s Violations on the Saturation Flow Rate at Signalized Intersections

Accurate estimation of saturation flow rate is a prerequisite for accurate estimation of level of service and delays of signalized intersections. Saturation flow rate of intersections depends on many factors, including traffic behavior and culture. One of the important problems of traffic behavior in Iran is the violation of law at the physical region of intersections. The main purpose of this ...

Generic Characterization of Equilibrium Speed-Flow Relationships

By introducing the speed-elasticity of flow, this paper provides a generic characterization for equilibrium speed-flow curves that satisfy the fundamental identity of the traffic flow. With this new characterization, we have integrated several well-known speed-flow models, including the classic Greenshield-type and Underwood-type models, and the most recent specifications for highways from High...
